My role on this project was experiential designer at MATTE Projects. My responsibilities included creative devlopment of the guest journey, laying out the floorplan, 3D modelling and rendering all the touchpoints / scenic builds, creating fabrication drawings / communicating design intent to our fabrication partner, and sourcing furniture and props within NYC. I worked under ACD Andre Brown, and alongside graphic designer Nick Wilson

In celebration of Donald Duck’s 90th birthday, we brought his iconic cartoon antics to life blended with the energetic world of New York City. Reality and animation collided, with surreal cartoon-inspired elements fusing into the tangible world of a ‘90s birthday block party.

Each activation area imbued aspects of Donald’s personality into classic New York sceneography. Additionally, we incorporated 6 activation areas dedicated to Disney’s partners, featuring both product display and photo ops that fit within our ‘90s NYC story.
DJ Pee Wee brought the vibes for an incredible all-vinyl set of ‘90s R&B throwbacks, featuring a bonus drum solo. Professional dancers broke out in routines at key moments during his set, and after singing Happy Birthday, blue and yellow balloons rained down on the crowd.

Donald’s birthday was such a success, that Disney has enlisted MATTE and team to create a series of follow-up events across the world. See our recent activation in London HERE, and more to come!
